Township (Chinese: 乡; pinyin: Xiāng) is the basic level of political divisions in China. [edit] People's Republic of ChinaIn the PRC's dual governance system, the township's governance is divided between the Communist Party Township Secretary, and the Mayor (乡长). A township official is the lowest-level ranked official in the CPC government hierarchy. The township has very few defined government responsibilities, except for the Birth Planning Commission (计划生育委员会). A town (镇; pinyin: zhèn) is larger, often more populous, and less remote than a township. [edit] Republic of ChinaIn the ROC, both xiāng (鄉) and zhèn (鎮) are officially translated as "township," where xiāng are less urban and populous.
