[edit] Captain General Royal Marines?

Should we put this in the template (perhaps with a 'not an actual rank' footnote), partly to fill the gap and partly to dissuade people from editing the template and adding the rank in, as I nearly did before doing a little research. It doesn't exactly help that the Royal Navy has a page [1] showing Field Marshal as one of the ranks of the Royal Marines. -Scott Wilson 18:24, 6 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] RAF Officer Cadets

Almost without exception, the RAF abbreviate Officer Cadet to OC. There is also an equivalent rank for graduates, Student Officer (abbreviated as SO). I propose that the Student Officer entry be amended to OC - SO. 88.105.139.27 00:25, 10 February 2006 (UTC)

It is not obvious to me which column "Lt" is under. Can anyone make the table clearer? GrahamBould 10:18, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

This is an ambiguous question as is the table. The issue is that although SLt RN, Lt RM & Army and Flt Off RAF are all in OF-1, SLt is junior to the latter 3 ranks in the same way that Mid RN is junior to the 2nd Lt ranks of the other services. As I pointed out in the discussion of ranks OC is also potentially ambiguous as it is not a commisioned rank in the RN (I cannot speak for the other services) rather a title. Officers are appointed rank on entry at Mid/SLt/Lt (depending on age and speciallity) but are reffered to as OC untill they complete the first part of their training. They are however paid as if they hold the full rank. Further the table could mislead a bystander that the rank of OC is senior to that of the ratings/warrant officer, which it is quite the reverse as any trainee passing through BRNC will tell you.

Instead of thinking about adding Captain General to the template should'nt we think about this rank Commandant General Royal Marines as it doesnt seem to be ceremonial but acording to the article "professional head of the Royal Marines" and is "responsible for advising the First Sea Lord" but i dont fully understand it as it seems that its more a title and responsability --Climax-Void ^{Chat or My Contributions}

As you say, Commandant-General isn't a rank, but a title. The CG holds the rank of Major-General (formerly Lieutenant-General), so can be outranked by RM officers holding more senior appointments in the MoD. Captain-General, on the other hand, is effectively a rank, although only an honorary one. -- Necrothesp 20:28, 29 May 2007 (UTC)
