This template is used on 60,000+ pages. To avoid any disruptions and to save server load, any changes should first be tested in this template's /sandbox or /testcases subpage, or in your own user space. The tested changes can then be added in one single edit to this template. As a courtesy to other users, please discuss any changes at the talk page before implementing them.

This template combines several talk page banners into one shell. It was designed for WikiProject banners, and will only work reliably with such templates.

Use for compliant Project banners

The template typically is used when there are three or more WikiProject banners on an article's talk page. It typically should not be used for fewer than three banners, since one or two banners are usually not considered clutter. The template condenses each banner to a single line with the "show" option for expansion. The multiple banners are then "nested" within a single "Shell" (essentially a frame); see Talk:Fred Astaire for an example of this Shell in use.

The template requires each banner to have a bit of coding inserted that allows it to be condensed. If a WikiProject banner has not implemented the code, the banner will not nest properly in the Shell. If you find a banner that has not been coded, you can request the code be added on this template's talk page. As of 2007-07-03 00:01:03, all banners in Category:WikiProject banners support the use of the Shell.

Usage

This usage assumes that all banners used in this template support the "nested=" layout mode. If that is not the case, use {{BannerShell}} as described below.

Additional options

1. Adding |blp=yes will display the "Biography of Living Persons" infobox. This must be added for articles about living people and needs to be added before the 1= as in {{WikiProjectBannerShell|blp=yes|1=
2. Adding |activepol=yes will display the "Active Politician" infobox.
3. Adding |text=More banners... will display the text "More banners ..." instead of the standard text "This article is within the scope of the following WikiProjects:". Of course, it will also display any other text, if you choose to specify it.
4. Adding |collapsed=yes will cause the outer table to be collapsed by default, hiding even the project names. Only use this option on talk pages where space is at a real premium.
5. Adding |banner collapsed=no will (hopefully) cause all the banners inside the banner shell to not collapse. Occasionally it is decided on a talk page that it is preferable to have the outer template collapsed and the inner banners uncollapsed; such that it only takes one click to reveal all the content within the banner shell. Only implement this on page where there is consensus to do so.

Please note

1. The |1= is required.
2. Sub-templates must include the parameter |nested=yes.

Please do not implement this template on talk pages already using the {{WikiProjectBanners}} template without first discussing the change on that talk page. WikiProjectBanners is a similar nesting template with an alternate appearance, the use of which is dependent on editor preference. Once one Shell or the other has been established on a talk page, it should not be changed without discussion.

Ongoing cleanup project

The number of active WikiProjects grows daily, so the number of article talk pages that have banners increases as well. There is a need for editors to make use of this Banner Shell. If you'd like to help out, please visit the cleanup page for lists of Talk pages which are in need of the Shell.

The "nested" coding has been added to over 1000 WikiProject banners. If you would like a particular WikiProject banner to implement this option, please leave a message on the talk page for this template.

Use for any banners

Useage is similar as for compliant project banners, with two exceptions:

• Any non-compliant banners need to be wrapped in {{BannerShell}}
