PurposeThis template is used in articles to identify sentences or short passages which need an inline citation. It produces a superscripted notation like the following:
Use this template to "tag" information which may be questionable, so that other editors can know to back up the statement with citations, per Wikipedia:Verifiability To note when the request for verification was made, use the 'date' parameter, as follows.
This is needed so that the verification request shows up on the appropriate 'to-do' pages, and helps with the categorization of articles requiring citations. If you forget it will eventually be added by a bot. The 'subst:' keyword is used to insert the date as fixed text - if you leave it out, like this - you may also add extra parameters to leave your username or add comments about the particular item needing verification. These have no effect on the template itself, but merely leave a record for future editors to read. For example, the following would be good practice.
If you prefer, you can use {{fact-now}}. This simply calls {{fact}}, but automatically adds the date element. However, this template itself needs the 'subst:' keyword to work. Thus, use either of the following: but do not use either of these, because neither will give the result you want:
When not to use this templateUnsourced or poorly sourced contentious material about living persons should be removed immediately. Do not tag it; remove it. For more information, see the section on poorly sourced contentious material in the Biography of Living Persons policy. Material which is doubtful and harmful may be removed immediately, rather than tagged. See Unsourced material. If you have the time and ability to find an authoritative reference, please do so. Then add the citation yourself, or correct the article text. After all, the ultimate goal is not to merely identify problems, but to fix them. Many editors object to what they perceive as overuse of this tag, particularly in what is known as "drive-by" tagging, which is applying the tag without attempting to address the issues at all. Consider whether adding this tag in an article is the best approach before using it, and use it judiciously. This template is intended for specific passages which need citation. For articles or sections which have significant material lacking sources (rather than just specific short passages), there are other, more appropriate templates, such as {{unreferenced}}. Alternative namesSome editors report the word "fact" is unclear or confusing, because it doesn't refer to citations explicitly, and so in addition to {{Fact}}, you can use {{Citation needed}} or {{Cn}}. These redirect to {{fact}}, they are just alternate names for the same template. However, note that cleanup bots will often replace redirected templates with a direct call to the main template when performing maintenance on the article, so {{Citation needed}} and {{Cn}} may get changed to {{fact}} over time.
