[edit] United States NavyIn the United States Navy, Staff Corps officers provide specialized support to line officers and to all other persons in the organization. Staff Corps functions in the Navy include medical, dental, legal, supply and chaplain (religious). Other military services are organized in a similar manner. Staff Officers differ from Line Officers in that their primary role is not leadership. They do not lead a large section of sailors, soldiers, or Marines. Instead, they perform administrative functions in order to assist the actual troop commanders. Many officers will spend time in a staff officer billet and then move back to commanding troops; it is not always a permanent position.
