National Institute of Technology, Kurukshetra or NIT Kurukshetra (earlier Regional Engineering College, Kurukshetra) is a public technical university wholly funded by Government of India . It is one of the twenty National Institutes of Technology established and administered by Government of India . It runs undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Engineering and Doctor of Philosophy progamme in Engineering, Sciences and Humanities.
[edit] HistoryThe first admission to a five-year B.Sc. (Engg.) Degree Courses were made by the Institute in July, 1963 at Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh and Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, Patiala, with 60 student at each place. The Institute started functioning in its present campus at Kurukshetra in 1965-66 with 120 students admitted in the first year of the Five-Year Courses of study for the B.Sc. (Engg.) Degree in Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. The annual intake was increased to 250 students in 1966-67. B.Sc. (Engg.) degree courses in Electronics and Communication Engineering was added in 1971-72. in 1967-68 M. Sc. (Engg.) degree courses in Electronics and Communication Engineering was added in 1971-72. In 1967-68 M. Sc. (Engg.) degree courses in Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering and in 1971-72, a Postgraduate diploma in Scientific instrumentation were also started. In July 1976 Part-Time M. Sc. (Engg.) degree courses in Electronics and Communication Engineering and instrumentation were started. The First registration for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Faculty of Engineering and Technology was made in July 1967. The Institute changed over to the 4-year B.Tech. Degree courses with effect from the academic year 1985-86. The new courses was designated as B. Tech. The annual intake at present is 540. Special three-year degree courses in Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, designated as 'Bachelor of Engineering for in-service engineering diploma holders were introduced from the session 1982-83.However These courses have been discontinued by the Govt. of Haryana since 2000-2001 The 2-year M. Sc. (Engg.) degree courses in various disciplines were redesignated as M. Tech. degree courses with effect form the session 1983-84.Now the duration of the Courses is 2 years. From the Session 1987-88, the Institute introduced a four-year B. Tech. degree programme in Computer Engineering with an intake of 30 students. The institute also introduced a full time M. Tech. Degree courses in Electronics and Communication Engineering with and intake of 13. The intake of B. Tech. Electronics and communication Engineering degree courses was increased from 30 to 60 from the session 1987-88. Full time M. Tech. degree courses in Water Recourses (Civil Engineering Dept.) was introduced in 1989-90. In addition to providing in various disciplines of Engineering and Technology at the Undergraduate and Postgraduate level, the Institute offers excellent facilities for advanced research in the emerging areas of Science and Technology. The syllabus and the curricula are constantly being updated to meet the growing demands and need of the country in different areas of technology. [edit] Admissions[edit] Postgraduate and undergraduateUndergraduate admissions are based on the AIEEE. The exam is one of the most competitive examinations in the country, with hundreds of thousands of students competing for the privilege of a few hundred seats. Undergraduate admissions are on reciprocal basis regionwise. 50% of the seats are reserved for students from Haryana. The remaining 50% are distributed over other NIT on a reciprocal basis. This state-wise allocation of seats is unique to National Institute Of Technologies, set up as successors to the renowned Indian Institutes of Technology. While the efficacy of such distribution based on region has been a subject of keen discussions within the Ministry of Human Resources Development , there is no doubt that as a measure to provide quality education to the brightest of the students from all over the country, the move has been successful. In addition, it provides the students an opportunity to interact with other students from all over the country, giving them a unique perspective of India along with technical education. It is utmost important to maintain a cosmopolitan atmosphere at such a center of excellence. M Tech students are admitted to the program through the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) conducted by the Indian Institute of Technologies and the Indian Institute of Science. Post Graduate studies are offered in a variety of disciplines by various departments and students may specialize in fields of their choice. Graduate students are required to complete a minimum number of courses in addition to a thesis or dissertation that entails independent research under the guidance of faculty. Graduate and Doctoral students are also actively involved in teaching certain undergraduate courses. [edit] Student activitiesThe two most famous annual events held at NITK are Confluence and Literati. Confluence is a national-level cultural extravaganza, held in the month of March every year. The celebrations go on for four days and this mega-event takes months of planning and organising. Literati, in contrast, is a national-level technical symposium which attracts scholars and research oriented students from othe NITs , IITs and prominent engineering institutes like BITS, PEC , DCE and NSIT, Delhi. These events are entirely planned, organized and managed by the students themselves. The intra-college events are organized by the SAC(Student Activity Centre) and MAD(Music & Dramatics Club). In addition, the students of each department organize their own annual technical symposiums which are keenly attended by scholars and students alike from the entire nation. National-level conferences on technical issues are also commonly organized by these departmental societies. Each department's technical society has a the department chairman of faculty as the ex-officio chairman, one or more faculty member(s) as mentors, student head from the senior most batch present, and a student executive committee comprising selected students from all the four years as deemed fit by the faculty. These societies are primarily student-led and thus the responsibilities of the branch societies in organizing national-level and regional-level are immense. It is about 160 km. from Delhi. The Institute campus is about 10 km. from Pipli, a well known road junction on the Sher Shah Suri Marg and about 5km from Kurukshetra Railway station. It is adjacent to Kurukshetra University and located in a very peaceful and green environment. [edit] Honours & AwardsUndergraduate students of B.Tech. Degree Course are eligible for a number of Honours, Awards, Scholarship and other financial assistance based on their academic performance, means, requirements, etc. Chief among these are award of medals to Toppers in the various disciplines, citation of names in the Institute Roll of Honour and the Award for the Best All Rounder.
