Mercer County is a county located in the U.S. state of Kentucky. As of 2000, the population was 20,817. Its county seat is Harrodsburg[1]. The county is named for General Hugh Mercer.
[edit] HistoryPleasant Hill is the site of a former Shaker community. With regard to the sale of alcoholic beverages, Mercer is a dry county that prohibits the sale of alcohol for off-premises consumption. However, its residents consider it to be a moist county. The Kentucky Office of Alcoholic Beverage Control officially calls it a "limited county", reserving the term "moist" for dry counties that contain a "wet" city that allows alcohol sales for off-premises consumption. The city of Harrodsburg, although dry for off-premises sale, allows restaurants that seat at least 100 diners and derive at least 70% of their sales from food (i.e., not from alcoholic beverages) to sell alcohol by the drink. In addition, the precinct that includes the Pleasant Hill site has approved the sale of alcohol by the drink at Pleasant Hill, specifically in the on-site restaurant. [edit] GeographyAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 253 square miles (656 km²), of which, 251 square miles (650 km²) of it is land and 2 square miles (6 km²) of it (0.87%) is water. In 1774, Mercer County became Kentucky's first establishment. [edit] Adjacent counties
