Texas was admitted to the Union on December 29, 1845. Its Senate seats were vacant during the Civil War.
This list presents the men and women who have represented Texas in the United States Senate arranged in chronological order. The use of a class simply identifies which years in which a normal election occurs for that seat. The next election for Senators of class 2 is in 2008, while class 3 is in 2010 and class 1 is in 2012.
- ^ Rusk died in office on July 29, 1857.
- ^ Henderson, appointed to replace Rusk, was sworn in on November 9, 1857, and died in office on June 4, 1858.
- ^ Ward, appointed to replace Henderson, was sworn in on September 27, 1857.
- ^ A successor having been elected, Ward resigned on December 5, 1859.
- ^ Wigfall was elected to complete the term originally started by Rusk and was sworn in on December 5, 1859.
- ^ Confederate states Senators were formally expelled by a Senate vote on July 11, 1861.
- ^ Texas was readmitted to the Union on March 30, 1870.
- ^ Reagan resigned on June 10, 1891 to return to Texas.
- ^ Chilton, appointed to replace Reagan, resigned on March 22, 1892 when Mills was elected.
- ^ First elected to complete Reagan's term, Mills was sworn in on March 23, 1892.
- ^ Bailey withdrew from the Senate in 1912 but didn't formally resign until January 3, 1913.
- ^ Appointed as a courtesy Rienzi served less than a month between terms.
- ^ Elected to complete Bailey's term and to the next term, Sheppard was sworn in on February 3, 1913.
- ^ Sheppard died in office on April 9, 1941.
- ^ Appointed to replace Sheppard, Houston was sworn in on April 21, 1941 and died in office on June 26 that same year.
- ^ First elected to complete Sheppard's term, O'Daniel was sworn in on August 4, 1941.
- ^ Having been elected governor, Daniel resigned on January 14, 1957.
- ^ Appointed by Daniel to his former seat, Blakley served from January 15 until a special election was held.
- ^ First elected to complete Price Daniel's term, Yarborough was sworn in on April 29, 1957.
- ^ Appointed to replace Vice President Johnson, Blakely was sworn in on January 3, 1961 but later lost the special election for the seat.
- ^ First elected to replace Johnson, Tower was sworn in on June 5, 1961.
- ^ Bentsen served only two weeks before resigned the seat on January 20, 1993 to become Treasury Secretary.
- ^ Appointed to replace Bentsen, Krueger lost the special election to complete the term and served less than five months.
- ^ First elected to complete the Bentsen term, Hutchinson was seated on June 14, 1993.
- ^ Gramm was not a candidate for reelection, and resigned early on November 30, 2002.
- ^ Senator-elect Cornyn was sworn in to the 107th Congress on December 2, 2002.
