The Hermes project (November 20, 1944-December 31, 1954)[1] was an Ordnance Corps (United States Army) rocket program (the contractor was General Electric).

After the end of World War II, the project was expanded to include test firings and further development of V-2 rocket pioneered by Nazi Germany. On April 16, 1946, the project's first V-2 launch took place at Launch Complex 33[3] (a National Historical Landmark[4]) of the White Sands Proving Grounds, reaching only 3.4 miles altitude.[5]
