Benjamin Stephenson House's courtyard formed by an ell.
An ell is a wing of a building, often a farm house that lies perpendicular to the main portion of the house. In connected farm architecture, the ell is often extended to attach the main house to another building, usually a barn. It takes its name from the shape of the letter L.
