Clive Hornby (20 October 19443 July 2008) was an English actor well known for his part in ITV's Emmerdale as farmer Jack Sugden. He took over the role of Jack in 1980 from Andrew Burt who left the show in 1976. During his 28 years on Emmerdale he became one of the soap's most popular characters.

In real life, he was married to Helen Weir who played his on-screen wife Pat Sugden, they subsequently parted.[1] They have a son named Thomas together.

Hornby appeared in various television productions including the Royal Air Force National Service sitcom Get Some In!, Gerry Anderson's Space: 1999 and Minder alongside George Cole. He first appeared in Emmerdale on February 19, 1980 in what was originally a three-month contract.

During the 1960s, Hornby was a drummer with The Dennisons.[2]

On 3 July 2008, Clive Hornby died.[3] He had taken a break from the soap to battle a then unnamed illness. It was stated by The Sun that Clive Hornby died of hypoxia, which is often associated with cancer,[4] in a Leeds Hospice. His funeral took place on 15 July 2008 at Rawdon Crematorium in Leeds.[5]
