It has never been surrounded by defensive walls. It was mainly a trade town. Before the Second World War about a half of the town's population were Jewish. During the war most of them were murdered by the Nazis in the Auschwitz concentration camp (located nearly 20 km from the town). The town is also the corporate centre of the large locomotive factory Fablok.
