Brian Nelson Calley[1] (born March 25, 1977) is an American banker and Republican politician from Portland, Michigan. He is a member of the Michigan House of Representatives, representing the 87th District (map), which covers all of Barry County and large portions of Ionia County.
[edit] Personal lifeDuring High School, Calley volunteered for the local Republican Party, and joined its executive committee after graduation from Ionia High School in 1995. [2] Calley attended Michigan State University, graduating with a Bachelor's degree in business administration in 1998. He then earned a MBA from Grand Valley State University in 2000, pursuing a career in banking. In 1996, he married Julie Powell; they have two children. [3] [edit] Career and Public Life[edit] Early CareerAfter graduation, Calley worked throughout the banking industry, spending time at Ionia County National Bank (currently Firstbank), and most recently serving as Vice President of Irwin Union Bank of Lansing. [4] Calley was elected to the Ionia County Board of Commissioners in 2002, He served for four years until his election to the Michigan House of Representatives in 2006. During his tenure as a County Commissioner, he served on the Mid-South Substance Abuse Council, Ionia County Economic Alliance Board of Directors, Local Emergency Planning Committee, and Ionia County Personnel Finance Committee. [5] [edit] Michigan LegislatureIn August 2006, Calley won the 87th House District Republican primary in a 7 person race, subsequently going on to win the general election of that same year. Since 2007, he has served on the following House committees; Tax Policy, Banking and Financial Services, Health Policy and the Retiree Health Care Reforms Committee.[6] In 2008, Calley was named the "Legislator of the Year" by the Small Business Association of Michigan.[7] Calley was unopposed for the 2008 Republican primary for his seat in the state legislature.[8] He faced Democratic candidate Greg Grieves, Libertarian candidate Joseph P. Gillotte and U.S. Taxpayers candidate Phillip Peter Adams in the 2008 general election, winning reelection with 64% of the vote.[9] Calley served as chairman of the Michigan House Republican Campaign Committee for the 2008 election cycle.[10] [edit] Electoral History
