Artsvashen (Armenian: Արծվաշեն, also Romanized as Artzvashen and recently renamed as BashkendAzerbaijani: Başkənd – by Azerbaijani authorities), is an exclave of Armenia's Gegharkunik province which is occupied by Azerbaijan. Its size is about 40 square kilometers, and it's completely surrounded by Azerbaijan and has been controlled by it since the Nagorno-Karabakh War. Today, the village is mostly inhabited by Azeris as the Azerbaijani army expelled its Armenian population after it seized the territory. [1]

Artsvashen was the birthplace of Saribek Chilingarian, Hero of the Soviet Union, who raised the Soviet flag over Berlin in April 1945.
