[edit] Population of Earth

Physicist Stephen Hawking, at a White House lecture in 1999, predicted that if the population expansion continued unabated and the people of the Earth continue to use power at the rate they did then, that by the year 2600 people will be standing shoulder to shoulder and the Earth will glow red hot.[1]

  1. ^ Note : is it necessary to say that this (final) situation is impossible to really happen ?!
The population would not continue to expand at a constant rate on Earth, because of the growing difficulties to maintain this rate (alimentation, waste, pollution . . .); never think to this "standing shoulder to shoulder".
The linked presentation of the consequences of the increase of use power, shows the same impossibility to maintain a constant rate of increase : the sources of power wouldn't be able to be sufficient to reach this theoretical level.
And it's obvious that Earth would become uninhabitable, far before being heated "red hot" ! The current total rate of human use power is next 1/10000th of the total flow of energy of the Earth (which is mainly solar origin).

This shows only that these rates wouldn't continue to be constant, and we are sure that well before this epoch, all will have changed by then !
